Illinois has a new law that will go into effect on January 1, 2023, requiring all controlled substance prescribers to issue prescriptions electronically. This requirement is for all prescriptions classified as Schedule II, III, IV, or V.
The only exemption to this requirement is if a prescriber issues 25 prescriptions or less in 12 months.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has the authority to allow for additional exemptions. At this time, IDFPR has not announced any other exemptions to this law.
Therefore, this requirement will be fully in effect on January 1, 2023.
